Uses
This medication is used to treat infertility in women. It works by stimulating an increase in the amount of hormones that support the growth and release of a mature egg (ovulation). This medication is not recommended for women whose ovaries no longer make eggs properly (primary pituitary or ovarian failure).
How to use Clomiphene Citrate
Clomiphene must be taken by mouth exactly as directed by your doctor in order to be most effective. It is important to follow your dosing schedule carefully.
Your dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not take it more often or for a longer time than prescribed by your doctor. Long-term treatment with this medication is not recommended and should not be more than 6 cycles.
You may be directed to record your body temperature, perform ovulation tests, and properly time sexual intercourse for best results. Ask your doctor if you have any questions
Side Effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to clomiphene: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Some women using this medicine develop a condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), especially after the first treatment. OHSS can be a life threatening condition. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the following symptoms of OHSS:
stomach pain, bloating;
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
rapid weight gain, especially in your face and midsection;
little or no urinating; or
pain when you breathe, rapid heart rate, feeling short of breath (especially when lying down).
Stop using clomiphene and call your doctor at once if you have:
pelvic pain or pressure, enlargement in your pelvic area;
vision problems;
seeing flashes of light or "floaters" in your vision;
increased sensitivity of your eyes to light; or
heavy vaginal bleeding.
Common clomiphene side effects may include:
flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling);
breast pain or tenderness;
headache; or
breakthrough bleeding or spotting.
Precautions
Female: Adults: 1 tab daily for 5 consecutive days, starting on fifth day of menstruation (preferably on 2nd day) or at any time (normally preceded by a progestogen induced withdrawal bleed) if cycles have ceased. Second course of 100 mg daily for 5 days, may be given in the absence of ovulation. Most patients who are going to respond will do so to first course; 3 course should constitute adequate therapeutic trial. Long-term cyclical therapy not recommended.
Male infertility: Adults: 25 mg/day for 25 days with 5 days rest, or 100 mg every Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

FAQs
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Overdose may result in nausea, vomiting, hot flashes, blurring or spots in your vision, or abdominal pain.
What should I avoid?
This medication may cause blurred vision. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert and able to see clearly.
